LEJOG day 16: Bath to Old Sodbury
Today was lovely! I have spent all day walking the Cotswold Way and it has been everything I hoped a long-distance trail would be: well signposted, well-worn, and easy to walk. I had my phone in my pocket most of the day because every time I thought "I wonder which way I go here?" there was a nice, clear waymarker.
I spent my day off yesterday in Bath- I figured I'd rather take it a day early than sit in Old Sodbury all day on a Sunday- and was joined by Hector, and we had a lovely time eating and joining thousands of other tourists looking around the Roman Baths. I also whirled around the Abbey (which charged half what Glastonbury did, as a voluntary donation, despite having all four walls, a roof and glass in the windows) and the Jane Austen Centre because how could I not? I also took advantage of the presence of both chain sushi and chain pizza restaurants to satisfy cravings I've carried with me almost since Land's End.
The only disadvantage of today's walk being so well-marked was I took virtually no photos as I never had my phone out. I soaked up the views with my eyes instead.
Distance walked: 17.86 miles
Time taken: 6h
Percentage complete: 23.2%
Boot cost per mile: £0.34
Lunch: the driest ever ham sandwich, a bag of crisps and a cookie the size of my hand
Last night's accommodation: the youth hostel in Bath, on Bathwick hill. This is the first place I've been disappointed by, and not because I'm comparing with B&Bs. Compared to the youth hostel in Penzance, the only thing Bath has going for it is a rather nice building. Otherwise, the room was smaller, the shower cubicles also smaller so you couldn't wash without getting your clothes wet, the toilets didn't flush properly, the floors didn't feel clean, and there were only two lockers in a dorm room for four - and the staff at the reception desk didn't really seem to understand why this was a problem.
Pulteney Bridge and the weir
A bookshop with my sense of humour
An abbey window, complete with glass
What a fabulous ceiling
Part of the Roman Baths
A door near the Royal Crescent
Ummm...what?
A view!
Bluebells and wild garlic
Dyrham Park, which I walked around but hadn't time to visit

Did you not go to Sally Lund's in Bath? I think you may need to go back another time.
